4 Tips to Reduce Spring Allergens in Your Home

reduce-allergens

As we discussed in our last blog, poor air quality in your home is a year-round allergy threat. But with spring and “allergy season” around the corner, indoor air quality becomes even more important.

Spring brings a wide and abundant variety of allergens, and your home’s ventilation system may need an extra boost to deal with the increase. Gold Star is the Newark HVAC company with the expertise to reduce airborne allergens in your home. These are our tips to help you breathe freely this spring.

  1. Choose a high-quality air filter. Allergens are most noticeable once they’ve collected on surfaces in your home, but some airborne particles don’t settle. The majority of allergic respiratory symptoms are caused by these airborne particles. Using a HEPA filter – a High Efficiency Particle Air filter – can remove more than 99% of the airborne particles in your home. This includes allergens such as spores, dust, pollen, pet dander and more.
  2. Change your air filters more frequently. HVAC filters should be changed every 30-45 days, but during allergy season you may benefit from changing them every 20-30 days instead. Keep a fresh supply of HVAC filters on hand so you can change them as needed. Consider putting a reminder on your calendar or phone so you don’t end up with a clogged filter.
  3. Invest in a dehumidifier. High humidity is a breeding ground for mold and mildew. The U.S. Department of Environmental Protection recommends that indoor humidity levels be kept below 50% to reduce the effects of airborne allergens. A dehumidifier removes moisture from the air and collects it in a tank or pumps it outdoors. If humidity is a constant problem in your home, consider installing a whole-house dehumidifier that attaches to your HVAC system.
  4. Consider a whole-house electronic air cleaner. A good filtration unit can significantly reduce indoor allergens and make a considerable difference in indoor air quality. An electric air cleaner uses alternating charges on the filter to attract even the smallest particles. We install electric air cleaners, which have the most efficient filters on the market. You can expect nothing but the best for your Newark HVAC company.
